FAQS

LOCKSTAR Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve booked my appointment, how should I prepare? We’re looking forward to your upcoming appointment at Lockstar! Preparing for your appointment is easy, simply have your previous style already removed if wearing locks. For loose hair, it must be detangled, meaning if you have been wearing double twists or braids, once removed, you must comb through the hair for the stylist’s convenience. If you would rather us remove your style or detangle your hair, notify us in advance so that your appointment time can be adjusted. There is an additional $50 take out fee for this service. In the event a style is still in, because that service was not scheduled, it is up to the stylist’s schedule and discretion to complete the original service that day.

What products does Lockstar Salon use on our hair? Depending on what service you book, there are a variety of products that we use on your hair- all intended to bring out your hair’s maximum potential: Lockstar Classic Oil, Lockstar Basic Training Wet Styler , Lockstar Scalp Quench, Hydra Curlformer, Design Essentials Reflections Liquid Shine, Crystal's Royal Secrets, Natures Blessings, Ashea Shea Loc, Hairobics Booster, Tea Tree Shampoo, Green Shampoo, Castiles Shampoo, Pureology Conditioners, Crema Treatments, and a few others. Most of the products that we use can be purchased for you to maintain your hair at home.

Are the products being used on my hair organic and natural? Some of the products are organic. Most of the products are natural. All of the products are hand picked for ultimate performance and to age well while experiencing your style. Because we are a salon of licensed cosmetologists, we do perform color services with products that are not 100% natural. They do feature organic properties to lessen the harshness of the haircolor chemical. To better understand each product, check out our ingredients in the online store page where you can find details of the Lockstar line. For products outside of the Lockstar range, feel free to ask your stylist during the appointment, call ahead, and come in early to explore our retail area for yourself.

Can I wash my hair after just starting locks? No! The perfect set up is for Lockstar to start and maintain your locks especially in the beginning while you and your hair are getting used to this new process. If you shampoo too soon or too vigorously, you can halt locking. Even worse, you may have to go through the starting process again. If an emergency occurs, give us a call for specific instructions.

What is a groom? A groom is: 2 shampoos, hair conditioned if needed, your scalp moisturized, & your locks retwisted with the palm roll method.

Does Lockstar do Lock Extensions? Yes! You can get human hair lock extensions installed here. You can also purchase high quality human hair lock extensions at Lockstar to be installed elsewhere. The extensions that we retail are the exact extensions that we use on guests here at Lockstar. Booking your appointment is easy: Simply give us a call or visit: Lockstar online booking link to schedule a consultation. Please put lock extension consultation in the notes section. During the consultation, we determine what size and length locks you desire. You can see, feel, and pick out your locks. We also discuss the fullness and can give you an approximate install time and price. Keep in mind that lock extensions take around 6-8 hours to complete. The consultation is $30. That fee comes off of the fee for the service. After completing the consultation, we are on the same page with a plan of action and can proceed with scheduling your install appointment. A $200 deposit is required to secure that appointment. Your deposit is fully refundable as long as your appointment is canceled 48 hours in advance. Our guests love our lock extension service! We have performed this service for years and can guarantee a set that lasts you for years allowing your real locks to grow out into the added hair.

I'm running a little late. Can I still come to my appointment? Lockstar gives each of our clients a 15 minute grace period to make it to their appointment. After 15 minutes, the client has then missed their appointment. Finally, it is up to the stylist if the service can be completed.

My stylist’s schedule is fully booked for a long time. Can I see another stylist? Absolutely! We would much rather you come here to be taken care of than go somewhere else, even if it is with a different stylist than who you started with. We operate like a family and are happy to share the experience of doing your hair and getting to know you.

Wait, Why do I need a credit card on file to schedule an appointment?Every single appointment is valuable. In the event of an appointment being made and the guest does not cancel within the 24 hours or does not show up, you will be charged a $50 missed appointment fee per hour of your scheduled appointment. Your card will NEVER be charged otherwise.

Wait Again- why am I paying a non refundable $30? Lockstar requires a $30 deposit at the time of scheduling. It is non refundable but can be changed to a different day/time (within 30 days) if changed within 24 hours of the service time. This $30 comes off at the time of service.

Do you have a cancellation policy? We have a strictly enforced 24-hour cancellation policy for all services. Lock extensions have a 48 hour cancellation policy. A timely email or call to notify us if rescheduling is needed is required. “No Shows” are responsible for $50 PER HOUR of appointment time. Late cancellations will also incur the $50 PER HOUR responsibility fee. Your credit card on file will be charged and you will receive an emailed receipt for late cancellations and no shows. This fee must be paid prior to rescheduling an appointment at Lockstar. Your appointment is SO valuable and another guest would have loved the opportunity to have had it if it was canceled in an adequate amount of time. Most stylists have an ongoing cancellation list. We appreciate the courtesy.

I love natural hair and locks. How can I learn more about it and how to do it? Lockstar offers classes on an array of topics surrounding natural hair and especially locks. These classes are in person and virtual and are for stylists and hobbyists. Please read our detailed descriptions and sign up for some or all of these classes. We are excited to be a huge part of educating you on natural hairstyling and locks.

Do hair models have to pay for their services? Yes, but it is not the full price.

Are salon clients eligible to be hair models? Yes. Pay attention to our instagram stories @lockstarlifestyle. We will post/ask for models for specific services. Please respond to get on our list.

Are children allowed? Yes. Children are allowed if they are able to behave during your hair appointment. Also, the guardian is responsible in the case of any accident.

What happens if I just graduated from cosmetology school, but I want to work with you? Feel free to come in and fill out an application. You must have a current North Carolina Natural Hair or Cosmetology license to be a stylist at Lockstar.

Do you have Early Appointments or Late Appointments? Yes.

I just got my starter locks done and I want to get a style for my next appointment, can I? We do not style brand new locks. We believe that the locking process is disturbed if styled too soon. We prefer the hair to bud and be at a certain stage before manipulating the locks for a style. This usually means a 6 months or more into your journey. RELAX! You have a whole lifetime with your locks to get to styling and coloring and all types of fun.

Please bring/use earbuds of some sort to enjoy watching or listening to entertainment on your devices.

Thank You for being a Lockstar and helping us to sustain a thriving business. We are all a part of the cultural heartbeat of Charlotte & appreciate you SO much.
